I have my computer do a auto scan every night at 12 and then when I wake up I turn my computer off and go about my day. I would say the more the better so your files do not get corrupted or info stolen.

Most anti virus program have a default schedule when to run.
When not, twice a month is ok, because an anti virus is not just protecting against viruses when you do a scan. When you get attacked by a virus. you will get a warning from your anti virus program.

How often you have to scan all depends on how careful you are with your computer. What sites you visit, what files/programs you run. Viruses don’t just spawn on your computer, they come from somewhere. I personally think that when you have a fairly modern anti-virus program (with active protection) running it about once a month is fine. If you suspect a download/file/folder you can of course always scan it separately.

I run it once a week on an automatic schedule. I think that is more for my own assurance although my computer manufacturer recommends weekly also. Like a previous answerer said, it is working keeping stuff off your computer even when you are not scanning.
When I download anything I always select Save instead of Run or Open. Then I go to the file location, right click on it and select Scan with my anti virus. This is the recommended way to download safely.
