How to completely remove AVG anti-virus? Problems with uninstalling and re-installing AVG?

April 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I know AVG is a really good anti-virus, but it just irritates me when I uninstall the program, and then try to re-install it again, it won't install. It says there are errors and warnings. I've read several questions regarding my problem, and I found out that there will be problems in re-installing AVG again when I don't COMPLETELY remove all of the past AVG items. I've had this problem in the past and I didn't know the cause of the problem, so I ended up using another anti-virus. This time, I used the "add or remove programs" in the control panel to remove AVG, but I guess that was a bad idea, and it failed to remove everything.

I tried someone's advice on using REGEDIT to remove the registry files, but I cannot delete them. I also tried using system restore, but it complicated things more. Can anyone please help me or give me a solution I can possibly do? I really want to use AVG again.

      AVG 8 is out now.
If you really want to remove all of AVG7 you'll have to use a cleaner, such as McAfee Quick Clean or (better still) AWC2 (free from IOBIT.com)

      REMOVE PROGRAMS:

      XP Home:

      right click taskbar icon

      select exit

      all programs:

look for program and use it's uninstall file

IF THERE IS ..NO..UNINSTALL FILE ON ALL PROGRAMS…DO THIS:

      start–control panel–add/remove programs:

      click program to highlight

      click change/remove

      next:

right click program in all programs listing IF IT'S STILL THERE

      next:

      start–my computer–local disk drive (c)

      windows–program folder

      right click and select delete

      next:

start–my documents–my downloads folder [ or wherever you download new software ]

      right click–select delete

      DANGER ! DANGER ! DANGER !

      FOR QUALIFIED,ADVANCED USERS ONLY !!

NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BLOWING OUT THE PC'S BRAINS !

      open registry:

      start–run–enter:

      regedit

there are 4 registry keys to check:

      hkey_classes_root
      hkey_current_user
      hkey_local_machine
      hkey_users

each "key" will have EITHER a triangle OR + before it.
clicking that will open that key and close it

      + hkey_classes_root

      click triangle or +

      same for software

now look for name of program being removed

      caveate here:

some programs have two file names

      ex:

      norton & symantic
      avast & alwil
      rootkit revealer & systernal

      get the picture?

make SURE you know ALL the file names of the program you are removing or there will be files left behind.

      ok,where were we? oh,ok ! nexxxxt ,lol !

right click each key and select delete

close that key and proceed to next one

      next up,current_user:

      + hkey_current_user

open key, click on triangle or + to open

open software, open key, click on triangle or + to open

      + software

right click each key and select delete

      next:

      + hkey_local machine

open key, click on triangle or + to open

      next:

      + hkey_users

open key, click on triangle or + to open

      open + default

open key, click on triangle or + to open

right click program key and select delete

      VISTA:

the add/remove application is renamed programs & features.

      accessed through:

      start–control panel–default programs–programs and features

      click program then click uninstall

my computer has been renamed computer and my documents has been renamed documents

other than that, there's no difference between XP & Vista when removing programs
