How to optimize recovery points automatically in Norton Ghost 10?

I'm using Norton Ghost 10 with XP and saving the backups to an external drive. I've got the options set to automatically optimize the recovery points when the drive gets full, but it never does it. When the drive gets filled, it just stops backing anything up. Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?
