I have bought the right cables and stuff to hook my macbook up to my monitor, but when I plug it in, all it shows is my background and nothing else. When I close it, the monitor doesn’t stay on instead it says check cable signal. I haven’t plugged in my keyboard or mouse yet but wouldn’t that just make it only work on my macbook since I would have to plug it in to my macbook? I have my mac plugged into a power source too. But will it always have to plugged in? But anyway what is going on, how do I get it to work. BTW its plugged into the “D-SUB” port on the monitor but theres a cable that converts that “VGA to Mini-DVI” thats plugged into my mac

There is probably a button on your keyboard that you need to press (actually a combination of 2 keys is usually required). Look for a “Function” button (sometimes labeled “Ftn” or “Fn”) and then look for a key with a picture resembling a monitor. Hold down the function key and then press the monitor key.

It sounds to me like you are running in extended desktop mode. Try taking a window and dragging to the edge of your screen.
