I know the program has a bad rep for not wanting to be removed from the computer, so I need a fool-proof way to get rid of it quickly & easily. Whenever I try to remove it by Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, a few seconds after the program starts to uninstall, the whole computer just totally freezes up, I can't even move the cursor around and have to switch off the PC from the mains.
I need help ASAP because I'm trying to download the Norton 2009 free trial, but it can't be installed unless I get rid of the previous Antivirus software I have.

You're wrong in both ways. Norton anti virus is the worst out there, it won't protect you. It'll surely make you think you're protected, but you're not.
Also, try a system restore. Go to Start > Run > cmd > rstrui.exe. Give it some time to load.
