Okay, I'm not going to give you step by step instructions because there's plenty of guides elsewhere, but here's the basics (if you don't know how to complete a step, Google/Yahoo search for it):
- Back up any important files, documents, movies, etc.
- Format your notebook's hard drive. (will wipe everything, make SURE you follow the above step)
- Insert your Windows XP CD and start up the hard drive.
- If Windows XP Installation doesn't boot, then you will have to edit your BIOS to boot from CD before booting from Hard Drive
- Follow the steps from the Windows XP CD

What you will want to do is make sure you have all the drivers needed for your laptop. Check the manufacturers website and see if they have Windows XP drivers for your specific model. Burn those to a CD in case XP doesn't detect them after install (you don't want to lose network access!)
Remember to burn a CD with any documents or photos you wish to keep!
Pop the Windows XP CD in and restart your computer. Make sure you boot from the CD. It will pop up to a blue Windows Installation screen. You will need to delete all partitions when it displays the list of partitions, then have Windows create a new partition from the new unused disk space.
Other than that, it's your typical Windows XP setup. I hope this helps!

Warning to do what you want you will Loose all of your files!! You need to back up the ones you want to keep onto a CD or DVD before proceeding!!!
The first thing you need to do is to write down all of your drivers. To do this right click on My computer and go down to properties. Click on the hardware tab and then click on device manager. Now you have to select each device (one at a time) and right click on it and go to properties. now click on the driver tab and then on driver details .then write down each driver.
To format a computer with Windows , insert Windows CD and restart your computer.
Your computer should automatically boot from the CD to the Windows Setup Main Menu.
At the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER.
Press F8 to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement.
If an existing Windows XP installation is detected, you are prompted to repair it. To bypass the repair, press ESC.
Use the ARROW keys to select the partition or the unpartitioned space where you want to create a new partition. Press D to delete an existing partition, or press C to create a new partition.
Type the size in megabytes (MB) that you want to use for the new partition, and then press ENTER, or just press ENTER to create the partition with the maximum size.
Select the format option that you want to use for the partition (Recommended: NTFS), and then press ENTER.
After the Windows Setup program formats the partition, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to continue installing Windows.
Once Xp is back on some of your drivers might now be found such as the sound driver. Contact the manufacture of your computer(eg, HP, Toshiba) and ask then for the drivers. They will send you the drivers and tell you how to install them.
Hope that helps you.
