The error message read: Firefox could not install the file at (xyz.com) because: Unexpected Installation Error.
Review the Error Console log for more details.

I had had the add-on on my computer before the upgrade, but when I tried to get the tool-bar back I got the error message and subsequently uninstalled it (thinking that that would allow me to download it again.) But now I can't download ANY add-ons.
I checked the error console and couldn't understand much. What is a profile directory, and how do I access extensions.ini? I don't expect an answer to that; it's just to highlight how very lost I am.
Also, I've seen some answers telling the user to upgrade to FF3. Is that wise with my operating system? How is that done?
I hope I was specific enough. Thanks a lot for any help.

You should just try doing a system restore and pick a date before the update messed everything up.
system restore- start>control panel>performance and maintainance> system restore

if you have taken an update then definitely you have installed firefox 3 . it is very advanced according to ffx 2 . you can reinstall the ffx and then put your add on again . the symptoms which you are telling is of the corrupted program , so it is better that you reinstall your program.
