I can't install antivirus in safe mode but it won't let me boot in normal mode…Any suggestions?

July 11th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I recently got this virus that looks like antivirus software. It kept multiplying and in task manager i found it using a lot of memory, so i ended the processes. you can't uninstall, even from Add/REmove Software. I didn't download it or anything, and i don't have antivirus software, it only got in because my firewall was turned off.
i downloaded AVG and it found other less serious viruses that never affected me, but it didn't detect that.. so i deleted the virus manually (i don't now if i'm completely rid of it, but i'm pretty sure). anyway, when i restarted my computer, it won't boot in normal mode, only in safe mode, and my avg software doesn't work either. i got on another computer and downloaded the set up file for super-antivirus but when i went to the other computer to set it up, it said it can't install anything because it's in safe mode. i can't get rid of safe mode, so how do i get rid of whatever is doing that and get my computer back to normal mode?

i think you best bet would be to reformat hard drive

During your endeavor to get rid of the virus, you more than likely changed something in the registry, or deleted a file that had a trojan (but was still needed by the OS).

I would definitely back things up while you are in safe mode before making more changes.

Your easiest bet would be to reinstall your operating system.

Your next bet would be to recover to a last known good or system restore to a time prior to the virus.

Finally, you could try to repair the install via OS disk.

However… all in all… when a puter gets to this point, a fresh install that iyou fully patch before using is the best call!

Can you boot in safe mode with networking ?

If so do two free online scans:

      http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

      http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

      then download:

      Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.20

      Never turn off your firewall.
