you could delete the Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger directory and then install your older one.

under the add/remove programs, on the left side there should be a section marked "add/remove windows components" and scroll down until you find messenger and uninstall from there

      Start/run and copy/paste this to the box "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

You could try using Revo Uninstaller.

      Safely download it here:

After successfully downloading and installing the program, open it and find "Windows Live Messenger" in the list. Right-click on it and select "Uninstall". Follow the steps to remove it from your computer. It's very simple and easy.

Go to the control panel > programs and features (vista) or add-remove programs (XP)> and find in the list the windows live essentials entry,
click uninstall, then you will be given an option to CHANGE what programs are installed.

You deselect the ones you don’t want and press ok.
