Remove Norton before you install AVG. Go here to get it: http://free.grisoft.com/
Here is a comparison of the free anti-virus programs:
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It's cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
I advise against Norton anti-virus, it's bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).

first download the AVG from here
AVG Free Edition -
An Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware program that protects you against viruses, spyware, adware, and identity-theft. It also puts a safety tick in search results in browsers saying if the link is safe or not

After you download it. Uninstall Norton Completely. After its been removed and probably a computer restart. Install AVG.
I have it on 2 of my pcs. and my company has it installed on their Windows machines. Very awesome i love it!. oh yeah and my father uses it too.

I use Webroot. It is cheap and it comes with spy-ware removal and an anti-virus. Good luck on whatever you choose.
