when i try to update i always get the message . " the connection to the update server has failed". i also reinstalled the antivirus. what could be the problem . please help!!!!!

the server must be busy,try after sometime.Also make sure your internet connections are working fine and that your firewall is not blocking avg.

First of all verify that your internet connection is working correctly, than try again. if that doesn't work then check the settings of the anti virus regarding updates.
or just give it some time and try later because at times the server with Grisoft may just be not accessible..
