I have a dell computer (desktop) with a celeron processor, it runs really slow, any ideas, how to speed it up?

September 20th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Even to go for example to control panel takes 5 minutes. Internet uses dsl. but it is slow even for non-internet things.
This computer is only about 2 years old, always seems like it was slower than most, wondering if there is a problem with the memory card

Why dont you format your PC, It will work as gem, You may be facing the problem because you have some virus on your machine or you have installed too many programs, Believe me & format your PC, It will work as a gem.

There are many possibilities, but chances are this is software-related. A celeron processor isn’t the greatest, but it should have no trouble handling everyday processes such as navigating to the control panel or searching through files on your hard drive.

Common culprits for this kind of issue are virus/spyware infections, legitimate software conflicts, and overzealous firewall software. Although one very common hardware-related issue is a full hard drive. Check to make sure that your hard drive isn’t close to full as this can really slow your computer down.

Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and run a scan. If it comes up with nothing, then check your CPU usage statistics (press Ctrl + Alt + Del, select the processes tab and check under the CPU column). You may notice a specific process or processes that are taxing your CPU. If you don’t recognize the processes, google them and see if you can determine what programs they’re associated with.

Many times firewall or anti-virus software with active protection get a little overzealous and either run continuous scans or step on eachother’s toes. Try disabling one or the other if you discover it’s taxing your CPU and see if you can determine the source of the problem that way.

If nothing seems out of the ordinary and you can’t find the source of the slowness, it may be time to reinstall your OS. Barring any malfunctioning hardware, this is a sure-fire way to restore your computer to its former glory. The downside is that it takes time to do this and you’ll need to dig up all your old software and reinstall it.
