I have a problem with my AVG 8.0 Internet Security?

Today I switched my laptop on and I found out on the taskbar that the AVG icon has gone black and white with a exclamation mark on it. When I clicked on that icon it said that the firewall is switched off. When I tried to switch the firewall back on the AVG 8.0 Software keeps on freezing and it wont allow me to switch the back firewall on.
