Ok well today i received a window from AVG saying I need to update to 8.0 I clicked on upgrade later because i need to kno a couple of things first: first before I upgrade should I empty my virus vault (it contains 7 infections from like a year ago)? Secondly is this 8.0 free? And also would i need to uninstall my current 7.5? Answers will be appreciated cuz i like to keep my software updated and my pc safe. Thank you

yes empty.
yes 8.0 is still free, it will remove 7.5 on its own.

You need to upgrade soon anyway as there will no longer be updates available for AVG 7.5.,

Update to V8, it includes anti-spyware and many other features which i will be posting about early next week on my blog.
It will automatically uninstall V7.5
Highlights include automatic update functionality, the AVG Resident Shield, which provides real-time protection as files are opened and programs are run, free Virus Database Updates for the lifetime of the product, and AVG Virus Vault for safe handling of infected files.
Version 8.0.1 adds integrated spyware protection and a new LinkScanner feature that gives users safety rankings for their Google, Yahoo, and MSN searches.

Replace AVG with these free programs (AVG is ineffective):
Avira: http://www.free-av.com/ (if you don't have anti-virus, or if you have Norton or AVG replace it with this)
Spyware Terminator (turn off web security guard): http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/ (use immunise feature)
Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
Comodo: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ (turn off defense+ to see fewer alerts)

Just to give you a little info on AVG 8.0. There is a free version available, but the upgrade through the updater on 7.5 is a trial of the pay version. Also a keylogger has been found in the new 8.0 that Grisoft is not giving any kind of response about. I have contacted them numerous times and still have yet to receive an answer. Also it likes to install this annoying toolbar in IE7 that monitors everywhere you go and reports back to Grisoft. My advice is to use 7.5 till it won't work anymore and then go looking for something else!

If you want free anti-virus software then go with AVG 8.0 free edition, some people suggest Avira AntiVir which does have a good virus detection rate (above 90%) but is let down by very slow updates, the free version can take upto two hours to update, which makes AntiVir almost unusable.
Other people suggest Avast which has an outdated interface (Link below) and is poor at detecting viruses (pc pro labs test). http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/1249/…
AVG 8.0 is the best free anti-virus software its not perfect but has a nice interface, decent detection and quick updates. http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage
Ad-aware is a useful free program run it once a week to clear obvious adware. http://www.lavasoft.com/
I would recommend using the firefox web browser it is simple and easy to use and it blocks a lot of drive-by viruses that internet explorer would let through.
Proof that firefox is safer: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3qxg0z6YQy…
I've tried other browsers like Opera (way too fussy and complicated to use) and Safari (too slow & and not as customizable), but firefox remains my main browser.

Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on - when searching for something using yahoo, google or msn, it displays either a green tick (safe site), yellow exclamation mark (use with care) or a red cross (dangerous site) next to every result. http://www.siteadvisor.com/
You may want to disable AVG 8's linkscanner add-on, you can do this from the tools menu in both Firefox and IE7, McAfee SiteAdvisor does the same job but provides more info.

Yes there is a new free avg 8.0 home edition available but it has limited security features and no free support offered. With all the changes made by avg i do not think it will be as popular any more.

Delete ALL infections in the Quantine folder. Uninstall outdated version at Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs…. click on AVG and Uninstall. Reboot the computer.
Install the new version of AVG.
By the way Grisoft AVG has won the coveted VB 100 Award for antivirus software programs. (Top Prize, independent test labratory). I use the premium pay version on my XP machine.
