ok, avira has about a %95 detection rate
avast:around %87
avg:82
so why would anyone pick the other two and a smaller detection rate?
what other factors are there?
seems like detection rate would rank right up there in things you want in an antivirus program, what am i missing?

There are some factors such as how much it will costs, does it take away resources from the CPU and how quickly signatures are updated. I did not know that AVG was so low.

This is due to the fact, that AVG is heavily promoted by people on this site and more often than not these people have not researched the facts about detection rates. Avira like many other similar free products can detect but cannot, delete many infections. The solution is to purchase a product or carry out the necessary research and find out how to remove infections manually.

Beacause they are the paid for versions of the software. Which have advanced deep scanning. The free ones have the same signatures but dont do deep scanning.

What your missing is that you talking about
outdated detection rates and show no proof.
I use none of the 3 you mention but all their
detection rates are in fact higher than you say
and you have not divulged your source.
This link below is considered the benchmark for
A/V testing and the latest one is FEB 2008 with
another due in AUGUST.Click on comparatives
and then No 17 online results and you will find the
3 you mention are
Avira 99,6% Avg 98,1% Avast 97,6%
This is not my opinion but A/virus Comparatives
and may change with the inclusion of AVG 8.
Edit. You can also look at the following..online res.
