I have an old pc that is missing a system32\hal.dll file. I have a copy of Vista, can I format and use this?

April 5th, 2009 · 3 Comments

PC is running XP, but I have no XP CD. The computer boots and says that Windows root >\system32\hal.ddl is missing, please reload file. Is this possible or do I have to format, there is little or no data on PC to worry about. Answers greatly appreciated.

Make sure the hardware can run Vista before wiping the XP version out. You can get that Dll file off the internet.

I advise you to DO NOT install Vista on your old pc; Vista needs many more system resources than the previous Windows releases (at least a 3000 Mhz cpu with not less than 1 GB of Ram, but a Dual Core with 2 GB is recommanded); using it on a old pc means the application run too slow and a lot of problems with the devices configuring.

P.S. you can get a copy of your missing file at the following address:
