You might want to try going to system tools and selecting system restore…This will restore your files to what was stored previously….This may take care of your problem…Outside of this you may have to reinstall that particular file…..Hope this helps….Good Luck..

if you update it from their website, often times they will include any missing files.

I found this on the AVG Forum and the problem lies with the last AVG update which is corrupt:
"UPDATE .BIN error information… Aug 16th 2008

Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted… you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.
Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good until it is resolved.
The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is set up to detect. In other words, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.
So in short… please do not post to report the issue, it's already known. Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue.
Also… for those users that did report the issue… thanks for the info."
So, according to this post from the AVG moderator, AVG is aware of the problem and will correct the problem with the next definitions update after the AVG techs have worked on it, which should be very soon.

I came across the same problem but got it sorted.
1 - Start up AVG,click Update Now.
2 - The list of updates is shown in Popup, click on the more information link.A list of updates will be shown.
3 - Click on and save all updates in a file except the last one - http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iavi1616oo.bin - because this is causing the problem.
4 - Cancel the update and instead click on Tools > Update from Directory and go to the file where you saved the updates.Install these and AVG should be working properly again.

Hey,
Don’t worry about anything, I just have the same problem. All AVG users are. It’s just kind of like a bug, or the update is missing some files. The best recommended thing I suggest you should do is nothing. You might mess up AVG, and waste your time. They will probably update this soon. Your Antivirus and Spyware protection and all those stuff will still be working properly, so you shouldn’t worry. The bad thing is you will have the ! on your grayish AVG icon. If you do not trust me you can search ‘bin file missing’ on Yahoo! Answers. You can see a list of questions exactly like yours posted somewhere 6 hrs, 7 hrs, 5 hrs ago, or somewhere today. It is just a false update made by grisoft. Just be patient and it’ll be updated, and everything will be working properly again.
Good Luck!
Kevin
Don’t worry!
