      Is the microphone socket muted? Is its volume all the way up ?
      Does your combo have separate jacks for speaker and microphone?
      If yes, is the microphone jack firmly plugged-in in its correct socket?
      If no then it's not going to work unless you buy an adapter - the speaker socket from the laptop has connections only for the speakers. Even better, buy a pair of cheap computer headphones with microphone.
