During the installition of Windows XP after it restating it suddenly come Up with 'Fatal Error' 'Files missing' and was saying for me to type the location of the file on the disk but wouldn't let me browse the disk, so i restarted it again and tried to run Win 2000 on the startup screen giving you the option between Win 2000 and Win XP Setup, but now when i run Win 2000 it wont get passed startup and comes up 'Missing or damaged Files' so basically i want to know how to wipe the hard drive while the operating system is inoperable, can it be done with the Bios (even though i'm not sure how to get on to it though this comuter) or do i have to use a boot disk of some kind, i do have a old Win 98SE cd but it doesnt make a difference when i put it in during startup or restarting the laptop,
does this mean i have to put the cd rom as the Primary Drive though the Bios (I use an External Cd-rom if this makes any difference)

There is a disk called Webroot disk eraser. Find the program Webroot Windows Washer -a "history" eraser program. It's a small program, won't take long.
When you have that program [on your friend's computer] search the program page and you will see: "make an erase disk." It makes this in just a minute or so. [some people, I have heard have even downloaded this program through file share.''
Put the disk in your drive and start your computer -press whatever key that makes your computer start from the DVD drive. [f 12 on many laptop computers]
Now just wipe your disk clean -removes partitions as well.
Now, the Windows CD with the missing files. A few years ago I had a similiar problem as yours -missing files after installation. Your CD may be slightly scratched or defective.
Have a friend or computer shop make an image file copy of this CD using Power ISO or Nero. If the CD does not replicate well, it's a sure sign that the CD is scratched or defective. Otherwise, if you get a clean replica [which strangely can sometimes be better than the original] use that Windows CD to install Windows on your computer.
Hope that is some help
