I have some sort of a virus or spyware on my computer and i have no idea how to remove it. Can anyone help me?

May 27th, 2008 · 9 Comments

My computer says "warning! spyware detected on your computer! install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer! I've downloaded so many anti-spyware and anti-viruses but none of them seem to help. They just scan my computer and tell me names on different files that dont make any sense to me. If someone is knowledgeable in this field, please help me!!!

It's a good idea to scan your computer with an online anti-virus scanner. BitDefender and TrendMicro are two of the best that will allow you to clean or remove the virus.

After scanning your computer online, you will need to get an anti-virus program. Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best but if you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):

      1. AVG Free
      a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
      b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
      Cons: low virus detection

      2. Avast!
      a. Real-time protection
      b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
      c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

      3. Avira AntiVir
      a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
      b. It's cute umbrella icon
      c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
      Cons: A very sluggish update

You will also need anti-spyware and I would recommend getting Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy (they are also free).

      Try Trojan Remover

Phony pop-up alert boxes, background changes or "balloon" pop-ups from the tray (by the clock) about a trojan, virus or spyware infection and the attempt to sell you some useless software to "fix" the problem usually indicates that your computer has a Smitfraud infection. DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR BUY THE PRODUCT THEY TRY TO SELL YOU! IT IS SCAM. It is really extortion-ware, first they infect your machine, then they want $$$ to remove it.

Sounds like your computer may have a variant of this ubiquitous Smitfraud infection.

Almost all "general purpose","all-in one" spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG Anti-virus, Norton, McAfee or Spybot S & D cannot remove it, as you may have already found out.

Free specialised Smitfraud removal tool is here (SmitfraudFix)
      http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php

After running SmitfraudFix, to clean-up any remaining infection traces, scan for trojans,
and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus. Press "Online Scan" on the right.
      http://www.ewido.net/en/

      Good luck.

Try Lavasoft's Adware. There is a free version & you can upgrade to a paid subscription. http://www.lavasoft.com/

Cnet.com is another good resource. Here's the link to a search for "spyware removal" on Cnet.com: http://www.cnet.com/4244-5_1-0.html?query=spyware+removal&tag=srch&target=nw

The files listed from the scans are either files that have been deleted, suspicious files or files that need to be deleted but the anti-virus program is unable to remove.

Try one of the anti-virus programs recommended & if it doesn't work see a professional computer tech to help clean out your computer.
