I have spyware on my computer…Help?

May 3rd, 2008 · 6 Comments

I have downloaded avast, and it has helped but one still remains it is called (XP Cleaner) and I can not get rid of it. Also some how my "task manager" has been blocked. How do I get back into that? It keeps telling me "Task manager has been blocked by administrator" but I am the administrator, I am not on a network, and I am the only one who uses my computer. Please help…. :( Sorry I should have mentioned I can't find XP Cleaner in my add\remove programs.

      1. Temporarily Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP). [how to]
      2. Update the virus definitions.
      3. Uninstall XPCleaner
      a) Click Start > Settings > Control Panel or Start > Control Panel (this varies with the operating system).
      b) In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
      c) Click XPCleaner to remove.
      d) Click Add/Remove, Change/Remove, or Remove (this varies with the operating system). Follow the prompts.

      4. Reboot computer in SafeMode [how to]
      5. Run a full system scan and clean/delete all infected file(s)
      6. Delete/Modify any values added to the registry. [how to edit registry]
Navigate to and delete the following registry entry:
      HKEY_ALL_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
      \”XP Cleaner” = “C:\Program Files\XP Cleaner\xpc.exe”

Navigate to and delete the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_ALL_USERS\Software\XP Cleaner

      7. Exit registry editor and restart the computer.
      8. In order to make sure that threat is completely eliminated from your computer, carry out a full scan of your computer using AntiVirus and Antispyware Software.

First, get rid of that XPCleaner.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is said to remove XPCleaner. This procedure provides a link to and tells how to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

      > How to remove XPCleaner: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic131823.html

And I would follow that up with Superantispyware to remove any other malware that may be lurking.
      > Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

      Then check into this:
Task Manager Has Been Disabled By Your Administrator

      Good Luck.
