What software is it asking you to download?
it is possible it is a virus itself asking you to download a bogus program. Don't download it.
Reboot your comp and start in Safe Mode (F2 on startup). Then do a complete scan using Trend Micro, and use Lavasoft Ad Aware to delete any malwares.
Can you post a screenshot of your program or provide some more info?

That pop up is a fisher I have seen it — Microsoft will NEVER send you a pop up asking to DL software — Microsoft will issue a security update and if you have auto update running you will get the update.

don’t download the xponlinescanner. it’s malicious spyware. don’t even click the box. if you have to, close the page, using control alt delete. google xponlinescanner.com and you’ll find lots of information about it. also, you should only use one antivirus program. two can conflict with each other.
