you have to set this up in Norton as I don't use it it is rubbish in my opinion AVG is tops with me.
Don't be afraid to look at what is on your PC as looking will not hurt anything just don't delete until you are sure and sometimes if you delete to the recycle bin you can always return it back to the place where you deleted it from if things go wrong if you run XP on your PC when things are going good make a restore point go to help for this if you don't know about it.

Your install may be corrupt. The reason I say this is because I am using the same Anti-virus and it works fine after the installation. The only changes I made was to the backup destination. I know the process is lengthy, but you might what to remove and reinstall the program. This is under the assumption that you purchased the CD version and not downloaded it off the Internet.

Please get rid of Norton. It isn't any good.Trust me!I have had it.I found out I had trojans and several other things on my computer, and all Norton found was 3 tracking cookies.I had to have my computer reformated.

      Please try these:
      SuperAntiSpyware:http://www.superantispyware.com/
      AVG:http://www.grisoft.com/doc/31/us/crp/0
      Ccleaner:http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
      McAfee Site Advisor:http://www.siteadvisor.com/

I would also get the McAfee Site Advisor, because it warns users when downloading software or filling out forms on a web site that may make them victims of malware or spam.

      These are good.Especially SuperAntiSpyware!

i think your Norton Anti virus has enabled "Automatic Internet lock". After you installed it, did you run any scanning program(because for safety it will lock the Internet automatically for the first time then the user will change it later)? If so, you should check its settings and make sure "Automatic Internet lock" is disabled.
Second, i think your Norton has a "too careful" firewall (its Parental control is complicated, for example it'll lock some sites that contain virus… and anything like that )

You still have that problem, i think your Anti virus has something wrong, reinstall it may fix the problem. Or you can try another program like Zone Alarm or Kapersky, AVG (let's look for it on Google)
