…continued…is it necessary to do this and why? And also i have CCleaner and when i go to 'Registry' (below 'cleaner' and atop 'tools'), and click 'Scan for Issues' then click 'Fix selected issues', a box comes up asking me if i want to backup changes to the registry…i have been saying 'No'. Should I've been saying 'Yes'? And one more question…the virus protections like McAfee and AVG and the others,do they search for spyware, adware, worms, trojans and the like? These things are different from viruses, right? I thank anyone who has knowledge of computers ahead of time for answering these questions as I dont want to do anything that would interfere in the performance of my pc….Thank You!!!

you should do a complete backup because if your hard drive fails you will have everything you need on the disks that you made so you wont lose everything

Yea, you need to click yes for backup. The registry is very sensitive and if one of the programs like spybot deletes a file by mistake and your computer wont start cause of it, you need a backup to reverse what it deleted. Avg the free version, only detects virus, worms, etc. Doesn't detect spyware or adware. Spybot does that for you.

first off you should be creating a backup. always click yes to create a back up, especially if you dont know much about computers. sometimes a program might mistake a file for spyware or fix a registry and you will loose function of a certain program. if that happens you can restore the backup. it is a good idea to keep the backup for a month, and if you dont have any problems delete it then.
AVG (the free version) dosnt scan for spyware i'm not sure about Mcafee. Trojans and worms are forms of a computer virus so will be detected, but some scanners detect some viruses and miss some.
i would uninstall one of them and just keep one antivirus as having 2 can conflict and not detect viruses properly. i Have AVG and find it better then most and dosnt slow yout system down. but if you have paied for Mcafee i would stick with that one and uninstall AVG. but reinstall it and get rid of Mcafee when the subscription ends.
also a firewall if you dont have one, you should. somethink like zone alarm which is free from http://www.download.com
this will stop programs you dont want to access the internet from doing so, and stop other computers from getting into yours.

Well Spybot prompts you to back up registry only to restore the setting in case any installed software fails to work. Spybot can reset the particular registry for the software from the backup it created. Only paid versions of McAfee or AVG scan for adwares, spywares and trojans. But Spybot being free is a very effective software in scanning and removal of adwares, spywares and trojans from your system. AVG free edition scans only for viruses and removes them. In combination with AVG , Spybot provides you with ultimate security that even some paid versions do not provide. Take my advice keep AVG free version and Spybot-Search&Destroy in combination.
