I just installed Spybot and it ask me do i want to create a complete backup of my registry..read on……?

May 22nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

…continued…is it necessary to do this and why? And also i have CCleaner and when i go to 'Registry' (below 'cleaner' and atop 'tools'), and click 'Scan for Issues' then click 'Fix selected issues', a box comes up asking me if i want to backup changes to the registry…i have been saying 'No'. Should I've been saying 'Yes'? And one more question…the virus protections like McAfee and AVG and the others,do they search for spyware, adware, worms, trojans and the like? These things are different from viruses, right? I thank anyone who has knowledge of computers ahead of time for answering these questions as I dont want to do anything that would interfere in the performance of my pc….Thank You!!!

I never do, but it's safer if you back up your registry. That way if for some reason Spybot or CCleaner removes something important from your registry, you can easily restore it. But it isn't necessary.

I believe the free version of AVG only protects you from viruses. Yes viruses and spyware are different, so it's a good idea to have both an antivirus and antispyware

IF YOUR PC IS RUNNING ALRIGHT NOW AND YOU HAVENT DID THE SPYBOT REGISTRY BACK-UP,I WOULD SUGGEST..YES,DO A BACK-UP.SPYBOT MAY FIND SOMETHING BAD.TROJAN,MALWARE,WORMS,ETC ON THE INITIAL SCAN AND AFTER THE FILES ARE REMOVED,SOME REGISTRY ENTRIES MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE INFECTED FILES THAT SPYBOT REMOVED AND YOUR PC MIGHT NOT RUN RIGHT.THE REGISTRY BACK-UP WILL RESTORE A FRESH UNINFECTED REGISTRY ENTRY BACK INTO YOUR PC AND YOU WILL BE BACK IN GREAT SHAPE.THE SECOND QUESTION DEPENDS ON HOW YOU WANT SOFTWARE TO WORK FOR YOU.THERE IS ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS AND ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAMS.MC AFEE HAS A SECURITY SUITE THAT GETS VIRUSES AND SPYWARE IN ONE PROGRAM.NORTON ALSO AND MANY OTHERS.SOME ANTI-SPYWARE SCANNERS WILL DETECT VIRUSES AND SOME ANTI-VIRUS SCANNERS WILL DETECT SPYWARE.IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE PROGRAM AND THE TYPE OF INTRUDER DETECTED.I SUGGEST A GOOD STAND ALONE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM AND A GOOD STAND ALONE ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAM.SPYBOT IS EXCELLENT BUT YOU WILL ALSO NEED A ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM.AVG,ANTI-VIR AND AVAST ARE ALL FREE AND ARE GOOD CHOICES FOR ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION.MCAFEE IS VERY GOOD FOR A PAID SOLUTION.

Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner invite you to back-up your registry just in case the scan removes something that causes your PC to crash. In which case you can restore the PC (or computer) to a state before the scan. Don't (in my opinion) go near McAfee, but AVG is a good program. But it has a full range of options, you can have free anti-virus protection and free anti-spyware protection. However if you buy the full Security Suite from AVG (which in Australia is only $98 for 2 years cover), then you get daily updates of anti-virus-spyware-SPAM-Firewall-email scanner and the list goes on. With all this security something can still get past, no matter how good security is. But with a good anti-virus and firewall you should stop most virus' and trogan's. Keep safe.
