No. Virus protection just screws your computer over. It will end up bending you over and ripping you around 5-10 new ones.

Some good one that are FREE are…
Antivirus(should only download one for each computer)
Avira antivirus(my recommended choice)
http://www.avira.com/en/downloads/
Personal Review: Very good detection rates. Sometimes I can find a false positive from time to time but that’s not much of a problem. Also if you get the free version it has the annoying habait of giving a popup about paying for the software maybe two times a day. It is very good to avoid disrupting what you were doing so I give this a rating of 9/10
AVG Antivirus Free Edition
http://www.grisoft.com/
Personal Review: Easy to use. Not the best detection rates but I very good product anyhow.
Rating 7/10
Avast! Antivirus
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Personal Review: Easy to use. It probably has better detection rates then AVG so I’ll give this a 8/10
Sorry never tried Nod32 but I heard good things about it.
Now lets talk about the Anti-spyware
You can download as many as you want.
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Great program! One of my favorites for detecting and removing spyware. A must have and it’s freeware. There isn’t even a paid version but there is a donate option. It has the option to Immunize your browsers and recovery system if you wanted to undo the removal.
Malwarebytes Antimalware Free Edition
It’s probably my favorite anti malware program. Good detection rates. Only used for scanning if you have the free version but great no the less.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Malwarebytes RogueRemover Free
http://www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php
Detects for rogue software such has winfixer or spysheriff and deletes it. Just to let you know if you see a popup of rogue software suggesting you have “viruses” You should immedility disconnect your internet(to be on the safe side) and press ALT F4. Also please PLEASE don’t click on either X,ok, or cancel because it will install anyway.
Superantispyware
A good scanning tool whats more there to say?

It does sound like rogue software which is kinda annoying but trust me it’s safe.
Adaware Free

Uninstall Norton and any other virus software you have and install the new AVG free. That should be enough
AVG is much better (and cheaper) than Norton and McAfee.

I’ve had some really bad past experiences with Norton Antivirus programs, causing all kinds of trouble and not actually picking up viruses that it should. If you have to pick between the two, pick McAfee, however, I’d be more inclined to use something more reliable like AVG (which you can get for free online) or Symantec which is possibly the best of the lot, I’ve never had any problems with either of them. But if it’s between those two, McAfee is the lesser of two evils, but has had it’s share of problems in the past.

Honestly, they are both decent anti-virus applications. But I personally would go with McAfee. I’m using McAfee right now, and have been for about 3 years now. I’ve never once had a single problem.
I’ve struggled with Norton before, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s just too damn bloated. It’s a resource hog. I’ll be doing something on my computer, then bam! It freezes because Norton is trying to update, or it’s trying to run a full system scan. Norton is a pain in the you know what
Honestly, though, I like McAfee. It’s not resource intensive, it’s got a very good firewall, and it also has site adviser which tells you if a certain website may be a threat.

Download the norton uninstaller program from symantec.com (makers of Norton) as it won’t uninstall completely without this downloadable tool. You’ll need to know which version of Norton you have to get the right tool.
Run the tool, then install McAfee. McAfee does all the things Norton does only it uses much less RAM memory and doesn’t pester you as much to click on this and that while you are trying to get work done. It’s also cheaper to upgrade to new versions later on than Norton is.

I would recommend neither. What I would do is put in a little extra money and get maximum protection. Get something like NOD32. Does the job best.
