I know Norton anti sucks but………?

I had a HELL of a time getting rid of Norton on my computer. The virus definitions took up 50% of my memory. My Mom has norton, her system runs slow just like mine did untill I got rid of it. Can I just delete the definitions file? Will it still protect from incoming threats? Or does the damn program have to take up 50% 0f your memory to work?
