I know this question has been asked a million times, but HELP my computer is running SLOW!!?

November 15th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I’ve done….
disc defrag, disc clean-up, reboot, superantispyware scan, avast scan, emptied my temp, unused and recycle bin and took a few things off my add/delete programs. All I know is that I had a Norton Antivirus icon on my desktop that I didn’t install, but I uninstalled
it. A few days ago I was having pop-ups….I never get those. Anything else I can try? I looked at system restore & the only date available is today….I think I cleaned that up too when I was cleaning?

when you uninstalled norton did you use the norton removal tool? if not search and find it then follow the prompts it sounds like you either have alot of programs or a virus that the other rather good bug catchers are missing

If none of those helped i think you are in need of a RAM upgrade.

you can pick some up in most computer shops, i would suggest at least 1-2GB depending on if you have a budget but it isnt worth getting more than tree because most systems will not accept it.

      Hope this helps

First, run a scandisk, then a spyware program, and then virus program.

Second, Use “search” for any programs under a certain size, and accessed around or since the time You’re system slowed down. This will show You how many files could be the problem.

Then do another search for any files CREATED since the time ti started slowing doen. This will sow You if You have a self-replicating virus that may be filling Your hard drive with infected files. A VERY common slow-down cause.

If You DO have one of those, Your BEST option is to replace the ahrd drive, and save it completely intact to install as a secondary drive so You don’t lose any files fom it, and every time You start Your system will create new files and risk a crash and data loss quicker.

If you don’t have one of those, You may just have a corrupted system file somewhere (it happens, no major deal), or a program may be trying to run a constant update procedure and not finding an internet connection, or You may just have too much running at Windiows startup. Thise would be better areas to do some cleaning, and reduce updater settings, as well as disable any printer monitoring software that may be constantly sending / receiving data through a USB or paralell port and causing lag.

      Good Luck!.

Try using Spybot Search and Destory at http://majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_Tools_Beta_d5396.html by picking a download site from the links with flags next to them, saving the file to your desktop (easy to find), opening the file, and following the instructions.

Once installed, get all your updates, immunize your computer, and scan (all these functions should be found on the left in the tool bar of the program under tabs). The program will even ask you how well you know computers and adjust itself to your level of understanding. This will look for other forms of malware that your antivirus may miss. The program will also block sites that harmful viruses or spyware use to enter your computer. You can adjust the settings of the program to either tell you when something is being blocked/ask for approval, or have it block silently. If you find that a virus or other form of malware blocks the progress of your scanner, restart your computer in safe mode (look under help on your start menu to find out which F# button to push for your running system, and follow the directions). This will stop all background programs from running, and speed up the process.

Also, check to see how many programs are running in your bottom right hand tool bar on your screen. Look at many icons are present, and if there are lots, close any you don’t really need.

You can also have someone who knows computers open your computer tower and see if you have an open RAM slot. If you do, you could purchase additional ram so that when you open programs, your computer won’t slow down further.

Also, check your wires coming into your computer for your internet. Make sure there are no faulty spots, gashes in the plastic coating, or a loose connection to the wall, any kind of filter device, or tower. If it is an old wire, replace it.

If you still can’t get it to speed up, you can try the last resort method. Save all the files you don’t want to lose in an online e-mail account or to cds, dvds, or a zip drive, and reformat your computer using your original disks that came with the computer. Make sure you wipe everything out, and start over. Sometimes you just have to start fresh.

Hope you find the solution to your problem!
