You may need to activate it over the phone go back to the activation window and click other ways to activate (or something along those lines it's been a while) call the 800 number and follow the prompts, if the machine cannot assist in activating your installation it will transfer you to a person that will work with you on it.
Edit : Just a thought but did you boot from the disc? Upgrades can only be installed from within windows, so if you didn't try this already log on to the computer and start the upgrade process.

Make sure your disk is for the exact same verison of Vista that came installed on your computer. The sticker on your computer should say what version it's for. I assume you mean Home Premium? If the Disc you are using is any other version (Ultimate, Business, Home Basic) it won't work.
I'm not familiar with the Anytime upgrade disks, but from what I understand, they contain multiple editions of Vista on them. If during the install process you're asked to pick one, make sure you pick the version you're licensed for.
If your getting this error during the install process, skip activation till the install is over, and then try again once Vista is fully installed.
Call Microsoft. The Windows Activation wizard should give you a phone number to call, and as long as your disk is the same as your licensed for, they should be able to help you.
EDIT
Well, then you'll have to get the original disk that came with the computer. Either they should have given you a disk that works with your key, or there's a restore partition on your computer that you can access by pressing a certain key at bootup. As long as your computer is under warranty they should walk you through how to do that for free.
If your computer came with a different Vista Install disk that you lost, the manufacturer will usually sell you a new one for like 30 bucks.
