I need to install my Kaspersky 2009 anti virus disc but it won't let me…help?

I've tried to uninstall previous anti virus programmes and then install this one and each time this message comes up, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personell for assistance."
We have a windows XP here and this is bugging us. We recently (I think, got rid of some horrible viruses (personal antispyware) using Malware anti malware stuff but short of formatting the computer we're stumped. Can anyone help?

Try downloading and installing Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable from Microsoft, and then try to install Kaspersky 2009 again.
