I had Panda on my old PC and up until I was suddenly hijacked,I had no problems with them. Now on my new PC,Norton is pre-installed and the only thing I don’t like, which is actually kind of important to me,is that I don’t have the capability to right-click on any file, whether it’s merely a picture or more importantly a program or video or audio file and scan before opening, like I could with Panda. Another possible reason to get rid of Norton(and people told me that it was just coincidence)is that I got a virus a few days before I was due to renew Norton(this is pre-Panda on old PC);I’d swear it was because I kept declining those pop-up reminders to have Norton automatically renewed for me but I guess I’ll never know!! So…there’s at least 2 reasons why I’m looking for a new program,in addition to whatever’s built into Windows Vista. The more important feature I need is the capability to scan an individual file(video, audio, etc.) before opening.
I appreciate all the answers but could anybody PLEASE elaborate on whether any of the ones mentioned have the important feature I mentioned needing?!?

Kaspersky is -the- best, but it costs yearly.
The best free anti-virus is AVG Free

Have a lot of experience fixing PCs and I hate Norton. If ever a PC with a virus checker has been infected its *always* Norton. ALso screws up the internet settings quite a lot.
I use Mcafee which has never let me down. If you want a free one try AVG 8

That’s odd that you can’t right-click and have it checked by Norton before you install/open the file. I always could when I had Norton. I used Norton for years and years, but Comcast offers McAfee for free if you have Comcast internet, so I am now using that, but I was able to right-click and have Norton scan a file. Wonder why you can’t.
Anyway, I have always heard that AVG is a really good, free service so if others also recommend that, I would look into that one. Good luck!

I’ve successfully used Avast, both personally and professionally, on hundreds of computers over the years and I find it to be excellent. It is a very highly regarded antivirus program, and is free for personal use.
Avast does have the feature you’re looking for — the ability to right-click an individual file and scan it for viruses. Both the program itself and the virus definitions update automatically, easly, and most importantly frequently.

i hope you will use vista home “premium” if you go with vista.. if you are still using something like windows xp home edition, then i would strongly recommend using avg8 and spybot search and destroy. you can safely download both free versions from affordablecomp.com, from their website. click on downloads in the upper right hand corner, download both, update, immunize, and run a full scan. depending on the number of files you have, it could take a while. both of these run regularly, have kept my machine up and running smoothly for some time. if i were to recommend a purchased program, it would be zone alarm’s security suite, for around 50 bucks. excellent anti spyware/anti virus protection, and it’s adjustable. check them out..
