I think I might have Antivirus 2009 on my computer?

November 9th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I went on a website and this thing popped up saying something about downloading something i clicked Run, and now this thing in the bottom right corner where it says like the time and stuff keeps on popping up saying I have a security problem and when I click on it, it takes to the place where it tricks you to download it, and I know its a scam and I’m not gonna download it, but it keeps popping up and telling me I have a security problem!

What do I do?

      Here’s how to remove it

(Run this first and if fails run Smit Fraud Fix)
Malwarebytes Anti Malware http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html FREE EDITION (one of the free AV to Remove Antivirus 2009)

Smit Fraud Fix http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php Removal Tool

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.
May not be required (Depending on severity & if so DO NOT) Once removed do so!

Step 1. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It is free and you can Google it and find it.

Step 2. Close all programs running on your computer (including this one) and install Malwarebytes.

Step 3. Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, update it, click on the “Scanner” tab and perform a “Quick Scan” on your computer.

Step 4. When the scan is complete, click on the “Show Results” button and click on the “Remove Selected” button to remove all the listed malware. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine.

Step 5. When Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

Step 6. You can now exit the Malwarebytes program. Your computer should now be free of the XP Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2009, and XPAntivirus programs.

Step 7. Reboot your computer. You should now be able to restore your desktop settings and you should experience improved PC performance.
Make sure you update your current anti-virus application (you are running one aren’t you?) and regularly scan your PC. I alo recommend that you continue to uses Anti-Malwarebytes to protect against these types of threats in the future.
Another great (and free) application for detecting and removing spyware and malware is Spybot Search and Destroy. Even though it is a great application in itself, don’t assume that it will detect and remove the XP Antivirus rogue. It did not.
