I want to buy Apple's mac mini computer. Do I still need to buy an anti-virus like Norton 360?

Second question, will it damage my computer if I added Norton 360?

Anti-virus programs are always a good idea, but they are less needed on Macs.

There have only been a handful of virus' that have actually affected Macs in the last 25 years, and few of those actually caused major damage.

I have been running my mac for 4 years now without virus protection, and the thing still runs as well as new.

There are two comparably valid interpretations of this issue.

One camp says that there are viruses for Apple computers, so you need antivirus. This is somewhat true. Just because there aren't as many viruses for Macs doesn't mean you shouldn't take reasonable measures to protect yourself.

The opposing camp says that anti-virus software makes you more vulnerable by adding another attack vector. Anti-virus programs, like all other software, can be vulnerable to the same problems that leave your computer open to malware. Just because they can find the stuff doesn't mean they're immune.

Both sides are arguably right, but it's still probably still a good idea to have some kind of anti-virus. The odds of an unprotected Mac being infected with malware are probably higher than the odds of your AV software being used to infect you.
