I want to upgrade to windows Vista using the upgrade. But after the install I have problems using USB devices?

I want to upgrade to windows vista using the upgrade. However, I've done this 3 times before and everytime I do this I have problems using my external USB 300 GB drive, USB Printers and etc. It shows that it's not installed on the system. Every time I install I get this problem. I'd prefer doing the upgrade where I don't lose anything and I've also used the upgrade doing a clean wipe on the system. the usb devices will work until I restart the computer, is there any additional updates I need to do after the upgrade or am I doing something wrong in the long run? Can someone please help???
