I work from home on company laptop. Can my boss monitor my internet traffic?

July 5th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I work at a company that employs a dozen people around the world. We dont share a network. My company set-up my laptop before giving it to me. I suspect the IT guy has been monitoring my computer activity. Is this possible if I work from home and we dont share a network (I dont think we share a network)?

If you sign on to a company VPN, you *are* on the network.

If you just plug in to your own internet connection, no company sign-in, then a monitor appears to be in place.

You're using company property - so that's how things work. If you don't want to get caught, don't do it.

Tell me if you are working from home, what business is it of your boss what sitews you are surfing on ? Hopefully your pc is wireless networked and password protected, but even if its a n Ethernet connection i don't see how he can be spying on you from work .

Yes, it is possible. Maybe the company doesn't monitor the actual traffic, but at least it will monitor Login, Logout times in order to verify that you are actually working. Since you are getting paid to do work, they could monitor the actual traffic to make sure you are doing company business, especially on their time.

There are many ways they could do this. If you use a virtual private network (VPN), then you really are on your company's network when you are working. If not, they may have an application running on your machine that collects and stores the information on your laptop and uploads it whenever you are at the company site and on their network. Even if neither of these are the case, they could use the same kinds of technique that identity thieves use; for example, an application on your laptop may send the information to a web service running on their web site.
