If AVG checks a site, does that mean all downloads aren’t viruses?

September 23rd, 2008 · 3 Comments

Like if it checks off a site (when you google search it’ll either have a green check mark or red ex) does that mean just opening the site is safe or everything including all download-ables as well? Which means if I download something off a checked site, there’s a 100% chance it isn’t a virus… right?

no that means if you visit the site it doesn’t contain malicious cookies that will change settings to your registry. Some downloads may contain viruses.

Agreed, 1 up for the previous answer, free of malicious code, and cookies, etc

Wrong. You can’t depend on your antivirus 100%, whether it checks downloads or not. I would look up more information about the website (http://www.siteadvisor.com), as well as scanning the file with something like VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com) or Jotti’s Malware Scan (http://virusscan.jotti.org).
