If I have a slow internet connection, can it slow down my entire computer system?

July 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Before, I had high speed cable (about 5 Mbps) and my computer ran smoothly. When I moved, I changed ISP's and now the speed is about 1 Mbps. Could the slower internet connection cause my computer to run slower too? Like when I'm on the Internet and I multi-task and have other programs running at the same time, they seem to run slower now - which never occurred when I had 5 Mbps.

Your apps that use an active interent connection might take longer to load. Sometimes they are waiting for a response from the internet and this can lag you computer.

A bad offender is IE. If you have it switching to firefox might not be a bad idea.

However that shouldn't cause much trouble.

Try Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter (under start menu in accessories -> system tools). Also getting a better computer (more RAM) might help. Lastly, you could try formatting your OS and reinstalling it. After a while it starts to slow down. If you are inexpeienced with that then maybe ask someone else.

I format my XP every 9-12 months.
