in windows xp what is a console session ?

when i go to windows task manager then users it says console session -i havent noticed this before, is it normal ?
what does it mean ?
I am not using remote desktop, is it possible someone is trying to connect to my computer without me knowing ?

      When you Remote Desktop to a Windows XP Professional computer, you always connect to the console session. This is the default for Remote Desktop to Windows XP Professional.
