installing windows xp and preserving files?

September 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

i have a PC here and it won’t boot up, i have important files in the hard drive.

can i reinstall XP? or my files will be deleted?

i have a laptop here, i reinstalled XP, it says that everything will be deleted.

after the installation, yup, the drivers were deleted, the user accounts were deleted, and the active user account is the one i configured during the setup.

BUT… the program files and everything it has is still there, all programs are still working.

I opened Documents and Settings, the folder of my previous account is still there and all files are still there.

Did i install xp correctly? i think i did, is this different from reformatting?

can i do the same on my PC? i really need them.

all answers are appreciated. thanks in advanced.

If you install a copy of XP on top of another, your files remain intact.
