on my computer I have norton, which is working great but the other day i was online when all of a sudden another antivirus program popped up and said that my computer was infected. It was strange because my norton program said that there was nothing wrong. I deleted the other security program because it said in order to fix my problem i had to pay foir there service. now my question is could it be possible that the other internet security program just gave me a list of fake viruses so i would cough up cash? or maybe norton doesnt wok that good. ( by the way my comp is working fine)

You have it pegged exactly right. Scam.
Phony pop-up alert boxes, background changes or "balloon" pop-ups from the tray (by the clock) about a trojan, virus or spyware infection and the attempt to sell you some useless software to "fix" the problem usually indicates that your computer has a Smitfraud infection. DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR BUY THE PRODUCT THEY TRY TO SELL YOU! IT IS SCAM. It is really extortion-ware, first they infect your machine, then they want $$$ to remove it.
Sounds like your computer may have a variant of this ubiquitous Smitfraud infection.
Almost all "general purpose","all-in one" spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG Anti-virus, Norton, McAfee or Spybot S & D cannot remove it, as you may have already found out.
Free specialised Smitfraud removal tool is here (SmitfraudFix)

And at the risk of boring the hell out of you:
NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to give 100% protection. None of them do, free or paid. Even your Norton. Most only detect about 90 to 95% of all KNOWN viruses. When a brand new virus is released, NO signature-based anti-virus will detect it for several hours up to several days. And over 1200 new variants of viruses and other malware are created by the "black-hats" each and every day.
So really, your Norton probably did as well as could be expected.

Norton is a trusted antivirus program. sometimes as you're browsing different websites, you might encounter popups just like you did as you described. this is all nonsense because companies want you to purchase their programs by automatically starting up the virus scan once you're on their website. so dont purchase anymore virus protection programs. I personally use norton is its a very powerful tool!

its not an antivirus software actually but a virus itself telling your files have infected and needs to install the program. That happened to me one time but i ignored it. Though Norton is not as good as any other antivrus softwares still it can detect various threats. And be advised also of not giving any personal informations as lots of scammers are on net. Just go to a secured website for software downloads if you think ur software is not good in detecting viruses.
