I bought my pc used. Windows was genuine..but then I took my pc in for a problem..to a local computer guy. A couple weeks later I start getting notices that my software isn't valid. The comp guy was gone by then, so no recourse there. It's bn a few months now but I'm tired of all the warnings from Microsoft..plus I know my pc would b safer with the genuine software. The Microsoft website has it for $149.00..anyway to get it cheaper? I dunno about this pc stuff, sorry!
Other than security reasons..what benefits will I get with the genuine software? Will the slowness of my pc b improved? I hv hi-speed service through Verizon.
Thank you!

XP started a revolution in anti-piracy software.
If you get a copy of XP that is not recognized by Microsoft as genuine; or you use a copy of XP that has already been registered to someone else; THEY WILL PROSECUTE YOU FOR FRAUD. PERIOD. NUFF SAID.
Way back in 2005 there was a 6 month amnesty period announced by microsoft to give all of us the opportunity to get rid of all our pirated software that was Microsoft issued and replace it with licensed copies on ALL our computers. The Amnesty period ended and the prosecutions began.
Bill Gates is one of the richest men in the world and his company has more lawyers than Uncle Sam.
Any software issued by Microsoft before and after the amnesty period and since anything XP has anti-piracy smart-chip technology built in to the disk which prevents copying because the license info will not copy; and the smart chip counts the installs and assigns a different code to eac one so they can be tracked when the cpu connects to the internet.
You do not have to go to a Microsoft site to be tracked and if you are caught you get an error message on screen stating that your copy of the particular software is not valid and then offers an opportunity to purchase one from Microsoft.
If you continue to use the old without relicensing it, you can be prosecuted and the fine is huge. Way more than a copy of the software, and you are a convicted felon. Not worth it.
That is the going rate for XP and if your computer uses XP then Vista probably won't work.

Yes, it's a fair price considering they install it for you online. Then send you the CD in the mail. You wont have to do it yourself (you said you don't know much about comps).
