I bought a Sony VAIO laptop last month from a web developer friend of mine. He knows computers and kept it in great shape, so I felt like I was getting a good deal even though the computer was a little older than I would’ve liked.
Well, in the past two weeks it’s been running slow and I’m tired of it. I am getting lots of error messages. One of them is about _winvet.dll and I’m wondering if this is what is slowing my computer down so much?
I would really like an answer because I am starting to get a little miffed at my friend and honestly I’d rather not be. I guess anybody can make mistakes.

Well I’m a web developer too and from what you say, I think your friend hasn’t done anything wrong. _winvet.dll is used with IBM server software and that shouldn’t be your problem UNLESS you have a damaged file.
_winvet.dll is a registry file. The registry is the part of Windows where executable files send their operating shortcuts. This is usually a very good thing–it allows your computer to run several processes at once without melting down–but sometimes the files in there get damaged.
Have you had any viruses or adware on your computer since you got it? They can damage your registry and leave it damaged, even after you’ve gotten rid of them. Or, the file could be left over, because sometimes .dll files don’t uninstall properly (unless you are working with IBM servers you probably have no need for this file on your computer).
Cleaning a registry by hand can take all weekend and has its own dangers. I use a registry cleaner called RegZooka and it keeps my computers running smoothly. You can try out a free registry scan at http://regzooka.com to see what’s going on with your laptop.
