Is an antivirus weak or vulnerable if its outdated?

October 11th, 2008 · 4 Comments

How can I stay safe if every minute there is a new virus out there? I seldomly connect to the internet (about 6 days interval) just to update my norton internet security 2009. Damn when my norton is outdated for few days, I got a file with an extension .cmd(windows command script). It did not detect the file as virus, but it was an autorun from my usb flash drive. So, obviously it was a virus. Now, that I had updated my norton, it detected and removed it because it classified it as trojan.pack.ns.anti..(something like that)..what the hell!..the technique i had done is i saved the file on my desktop for when the day i can connect to the internet again, i will try to scan it again..woolaah!!..it was a magic..the file that was clean 4 days ago..is now a virus after i updated my norton!!..help!!..how can i keep my system protected if i connect only on the net every 6 DAYS!…(T_T)
I DID NOT RAN THE .CMD FILE! IT WAS AN AUTORUN FILE FROM MY USB FLASH DRIVE THAT MY NORTON DID NOT DETECTED AS VIRUS BECAUSE MY NORTON WAS OUTDATED FOR ABOUT 6 DAYS.

Ok.. that didn’t make much sense. Why the hell were you running .cmd scripts anyway?

You should get pendrive linux; then boot off that, clean up everything then make sure your norton’s up-to-date.

      Get spybot; Immunize your PC.

and for god’s sakes don’t run .cmds; if you don’t know what they are.

      Practice safe surfing habits.

Most anti-Virus programs rely on updated signatures if they are outdated then your anti-Virus program is worthless, but they would have to be really outdated like a month not just a few days so relax. You also make yourself vulnerable when you have outdated programs because they become like holes into your computer that Viruses and other malicious programs can exploit and take advantage of.

If you are that concerned about this then get an anti-Virus program that updates every hour or two, something like Kaspersky Internet security.

Windows use a text file call autorun.inf to automatically trigger setup.exe program.
Virus writer use this feature to auto trigger their virus. If your USB pendisk is infected.
The moment you plug in, you will be infected.

Tips to immune your PC against autorun virus without help from antivirus program.

      create autorun.inf FOLDER at c:\

      c:\mkdir c:\autorun.inf

      if you have 2 partitions
      d:\mkdir d:\autorun.inf

if your USB pen drive is at f:
      f:\mkdir f:\autorun.inf

I use this method to immune all my company’s PCs.
