We have Windows Vista which comes with firewall. Does it automatically have anti-virus, anti-adware, and all that?
If so, is there any reason for me to keep AVAST, one of the few anti-virus programs?
My puter is running slower; I’m starting to think AVAST is a scam because something seems to be running in the background, but I don’t know what.

Windows Vista does not have sufficient protection on it’s own.
Avast is legit, and it runs on the background, because it’s protecting your system all the time.

avast is legit…
ur computer is problly lowe on ram thats why its slow….
another good anti-virus is avg….one good antispyware is spyware…..if ur comp is runnning slow…its prolly the amount of ram u have on ur comp…upgrading ram is cheap and it helps ur computer run a heck of alot faster

avast is legit. My guess is that avast is using something called an on-demand scanner that keeps checking the pc in case a virus were to sneak into the computer between scans.

Definitely legit, but that may not be your problem. You need at least 2Gb of RAM for Vista to run even slowly. Most pc’s running Vista have 4Gb to use the bloated OS.
If you think that Avast is the problem, try AVGFree (www.download.com). I use it on both my laptops, and I’m very happy with it.

Avast is legit. It’s supposed to run in the background in order to constantly keep watch for any malicious files or programs.
Windows Firewall does not include anti-virus or anti-spyware. It only has a firewall.
For anti-spyware, I suggest programs like Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware.

Since over 60 million people use avast,I hardly think it’s a scam.I use it and it doesn’t slow my computer down and it’s 4 years old. It’s running in the background because it’s real-time protection,it’s scanning your computer every second you have it turned on.No, vista doesn’t have anti-virus and anti-adware built in.

it is very good ..i’ve been using it for a while it is a really good anti virus program

Windows (XP & Vista) monitors if you HAVE antivirus but I don’t think that they provide an antivirus program. Some security from dangerous websites but no virus protection. Firewalls prevent outside computers from seeing or accessing your computer ports.
Avast and Avira are the two best Antivirus programs on the go… Just make sure you only have ONE antivirus program loaded on a ‘puter at a time. They see each other as viruses…
Vista on the otherhand… Not so sure about this anchor of an operating system. They better get their ducks in a row or I may go Mac nextime myself!

Make sure you only have one antivirus and one firewall
Windows Vista does come with a firewall but that is it! No antivirus and no antispyware comes with windows.
Avast! is not a scam. The free version detects and removes
How to speed up your pc
Check for spyware
You can use Avast! boot time scanner for checking spyware but I would also like you to use these programs to check for spyware
The free versions can detect and remove
Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Avast is legitimate - when your computer is idle Avast generates a database of files so that if something essential is infected, it can try to replace it from the virus recovery database. You can stop the virus database generation by right clicking the icon in the tray next to the clock. Avast has a number of different shields running, including peer to peer and instant messaging protection; they can eat up system resources. It has built-in antispyware and anti-rootkit capability too.
If you find Avast too intrusive, then uninstall it and repace it with Avira antivir and Spybot Search & Destroy
both free

There are free meals in this world. If avast is free, how do they support the software developers. Invariably, either by your surfing habits or deliberately planted, you get a virus warning that says that the virus is a keylogger that monitors your credit card transactions and your bank data. If you want to clean this, you are asked to pay. This is the catch. If you don’t believe me, you try it out.
Once the virus is detected, you may need the help of a professional to remove the virus +uninstall avast.

I too downloaded free avast anti-spyware. I am a novice computer user!!! I was thinking the same thing when i came across this page. I took Danirl A. ’s advice and downloaded malwarebytes thing.
Ok… so… what i didn’t know was that after downloading, I needed to go to
My Computer
Preload C {or whatever you main harddrive is, you downloaded avast on}
then click on Avast, which downloads the program to work. At least that’s my guess. lol
For the malwwarebytes, I had to do the same thing. Maybe… this might help somebody out there.
