Is AVG Free Edition as good as Norton or McAfee?

I don't have the extra money to just keep paying for and renewing my virus protection all the time with Norton or McAfee, and so I was wondering if the free version of AVG is as good as I hear?

Thanks!

Also, does it eliminate spyware too? Could it replace Spybot S&D?
