Is AVG truly a good virus protection?

July 13th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I've talked to a computer expert and many others, and many people claim that free virus protections off the internet don't protect like Nortan Anti Virus. What I don't like about Nortan is how it slows down my computer. I've used other type of protections before and never got a virus though.

I never download much either. All I do is browse the web and post on sites like this. I know that doesn't mean I CAN'T get a virus, but still… I'm wondering if it's worth getting rid of Nortan and just getting AVG since it doesn't use as many resources and is free.

What are your thoughts? Please post the pros and cons of each and give suggestions on what I should do.

Thanks.

The latest version of AVG free (8) is not very reliable, I was a big fan of AVG until the new version came out it looks better but is always going wrong.

I'm using Avast Anti-Virus which is free from http://www.download.com

The combination of Avast Anti-Virus and Comodo Firewall will give you the same level of protection as Norton for free and will use half the resources.

Avg is way better than norton i used to had norton before and it couldn't detect 3 trojans in my pc and slows down my computer. I notice my computer is very slow i get rid of norton and install kaspersky and it found 3 trojans in my pc. I was like what norton couldn't detect 3 trojans in my pc. Avg free is a good protection.

      well, I never liked Norton…
Indeed it slows the pc and it's difficult to get rid off!
instead, AVG is free, which is the advantage of it!

Now if AVG is good or not, I think is the best free antivirus!
If I would switch from Norton to AVG?
      Certainly! :)

Ive used AVG for a long time and have no complaints I switched to it for the very exact reason Norton seems to slow down my computer badly. Another very good one is eset nod32 but it is not free but has 30 day trial. http://www.eset.com/

AVG still has problems despite assurances from Grisoft that they would be sort sorted. Up to V7.5 great AV, V8….forget it. Previously I would only recommend AVG, now I refuse to given the problems many users are having:
      http://cotojo.wordpress.com/2008/05/27

I have switched to Avast, better definitions, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit built in, faster and more reliable:

Only ever use ONE AntiVirus, but by all means use an online scanner as a safety net, there are many to choose from,

It's ok…slow though…avast or pc tools antivirus is just as good but much quicker. And both have free versions.

Seriously, I recommend you should get rid of Norton as soon as you can. The features are very bad, as it slows down your system very much. Also to uninstall it, is also a very big hassle. People definitely recommend AVG over Norton as the detection rate is also much better, than Norton. The Real-Time Protection of Norton is relatively bad compared to AVG's. AVG is considered to be far more better than it, as the anti-spyware, anti-virus, web-scanner, and real-time protection are all extremely reliable and good.

      Norton Anti Virus
Pros: - The detection rate is alright

      - it detects certain viruses and spyware
(but seriously i am struggling to think of pros for Norton)

      Cons: - Hard to uninstall
      - Takes ages to scan your computer thoroughly
      - It slows down your system, by taking up too much of you RAM.
      - The Real-Time Protection is not crash-hot, it doesn't detect very much stuff coming in to your computer.
      - Takes ages to start-up

      AVG Anti Virus

Pros: - Is much more quicker in scanning than Norton
      - The Anti-Spyware included with this is considered to be one of the best
      - Detects loads of things
      - A Web Scanner is included with this, so it scans your internet use for safety and security
      - Doesn't use that much of computer (is fast)
      - Includes possible warnings that may destroy your computer
      - Advises you on suspicious stuff
      - Much more better interface than Norton

Cons: - It doesnt include a good firewall like Zone Alarm, but then again it has a better firewall than Norton
      - The License is only valid for a year, then you have to renew again

As you can see clearly people prefer AVG over Norton, as it is much better and securer.
