In a recent test of all antivirus software, AntiVir premium ranked 7th with 97.13% score, whereas Mcafee ranked 21st, with 86% score.

For years I have used Mcafee, but my computer eventually crashes and gets corrupt. I then have to do a hard drive recovery. I just got done with a recovery, and lost a lot of software that was installed. I don't think Mcafee is effective enough to prevent computer crashing.
So now I am thinking of using another antivirus instead of mcafee. Is Avira antivir premium a better choice?

The computer crashes aren't likely to be the result of any software but more a hardware issue caused by some bad components.

Avira AntiVir ranked #2 in av-comparatives.org tests
it reported a detection rate of 99.6% while McAfee got a 94.00%
