I have been using the free version of Avira for a couple of months now. Everything seems fine but someone told me it may not be a trusted company. any opinions?

Sounds like Norton propaganda to me.
Avira runs on two of my systems and works just as good, if not better, than AVG Free.
You can trust it completely. Even more so than the junk most retailers will try to sell you.
