I read some where that you should only have one virus protection programme. But Spybot is for spywhere and AVG is for viruses. Is that correct?

yes, they’re not the same kind of programs, so you should have both an antivirus and antispyware.

Yes you are correct. Some versions of AVG have a spy filter but it is OK to still use Spybot at the same time. However, you shouldn’t use another anti-virus, like Avast or Norton, at the same time as AVG.

You SHOULD use them together. Spybot searches for spyware. The newest version of AVG searches for viruses AND spyware. But the two programs seem to seek out different types of spyware.
I also use Ad-aware by Lavasoft. It searches for spyware that is different than what Spybot looks for. Not sure yet if AVG is duplicating Ad-aware, so I still use all three.

Spybot and AVG won’t interfere with each other. Spybot only runs when you start it while AVG runs all the time. Spybot is spyware focused and AVG is more virus focused.
However, your best bet for protection is an internet security suite that provides a firewall, virus and trojan and spyware and adware protection and also spam and phishing protection plus more. All the features in an integrated package work best.

When you scan, you should disable the non-scanning program. Meaning that when you scan for viruses, you need to turn spybot off and vice-versa.
There are quite a few viruses and worms out there that are written to “hide” under spybot. I personally don’t use spybot for that reason. If they are both running in the background, it’s going to use a ton of RAM. Avast uses less than AVG, so it may be a better choice to use with spybot.
