is it possible to password protect usb drives (mac os x)?

how can i have my usb drive password protected so that whenever i plug it in my computer it asks for a password before it mounts. much like a password protected .dmg file works

      Encrypted volumes isn't something that Mac OS's file system supports from a low level like that. Best bet is to just put an encrypted .dmg on the flash drive.
